CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

A Place in History

The corridors of the Egyptian military base were dusty and claustrophobic. Neither of which were helping Agent Taylor’s increasingly dour mood.

He sneezed twice, then swore loudly. None of the local soldiers in the prison block where he was waiting gave him a second glance. Trained well or just apathetic to his presence, he wasn’t sure. But as he blew his nose on the pressed silk handkerchief he always kept in his pocket – a Christmas gift from Sam, he suddenly remembered, all the way from Savile Row in London no less – he decided he needed to keep a close eye on them. Allies they might be in this particular venture, but this was their country and they were proud and fierce, and if they truly came to understand what lay beneath their desert sands it could become problematic.

Right now, only he and The Nine truly knew what was at stake here. Which is why he had to ensure his team was the one left holding all the cards when this convenient little deal with Colonel Arif was done. History was his for the taking. He wouldn’t let native pride stand in the way of what needed to be done to lead the world into a brighter, more stable future under America.

Freedom for all, whatever the cost, he told himself. The same mantra that had been ingrained in him early on – and the one he repeated whenever he needed reminding to hold his tongue and smile sweetly in order to get the work done.

“Agent Taylor,” a surprisingly jovial voice boomed at him down the corridor. The Egyptian soldiers around him suddenly stood all the straighter. “Welcome to my humble fortress!”

A handsome, bearded military man with a false smile adorning his lips strutted down the corridor in his pristine uniform, a ridiculous number of probably fake medals pinned to his chest. It was a wonder he was able to stand upright, Taylor considered, offering a polite smile of his own. He knew the man had fought at the Suez against the British recently, but there was no way anybody could earn that many medals and not have been killed or at least seriously maimed.

Nevertheless, he had presence and respect, and the soldiers all saluted him as he passed. Taylor fought a degree of envy as he held out a hand. If only his team of men – and especially that woman – had been the same.

“Colonel Arif, thank you for hosting us. I trust you are well?”

The Colonel grasped his hand and shook it vigorously.

“The day has come, Agent. We stand on the precipice of one of the greatest discoveries mankind has ever known. A great day for Egypt. Can you feel the gaze of history upon us?”

Taylor nodded as he knew he must. Like it or not, Colonel Arif remained the key to reaching the Hall of Records safely and securely. Diplomacy was the order of the day… for now.

“A great day for us all,” he replied carefully.
